The Daily News reports:
Women who have sex outside marriage should be hanged and men who commit rape “forgiven,” senior Indian politicians have claimed.
In a general election speech, Mulayam Singh Yadav, said he would scrap a recently introduced death-penalty law for rapists.
Yadav said men should not face the death penalty, noting that “boys…make mistakes.”
His Socialist Party runs India’s largest state of Uttar Pradesh, with a population of over 200 million, reports The Independent.
Yadav tried to backtrack on his claims and said he was “against rape” and innocent people should not be hanged.
But a colleague who rushed to his defense said women are guilty if they are raped or have sex outside marriage.
Abu Amzi told Indian TV: “Rape is punishable by hanging in Islam. But here, nothing happens to women, only to men. Even the woman is guilty.”
Pressed further, Amzi said: “Any woman if, whether married or unmarried, goes along with a man, with or without consent, should be hanged. Both should be hanged. It shouldn’t be allowed even if a woman goes by consent.”
Voting in the Indian general election has started and will continue until May 16. Almost 815 million Indians can vote.
